Buying books and mags for the iPad saved me $19 last month. HOWEVER.... On my last vacation I had my iPad with books and magazines loaded. I must admit, as the "internet guy", it seemed like a natural step for me or perhaps a mandatory step to move to the iPad. For me, the perceived ease of use was offset by the "experience"...
10 Reasons Why I Am Not Taking my iPad on my next vacation...
1. You can not just set down your iPad and jump in the pool. Hot theft item! 2. My kids think it is funny to splash me from the pool. 3. Charge the battery on my magazine? What? Kids left the iPad on last night. 4. Sunscreen on my fingers makes my iPad messy. 5. The glare from the sun kills the read. 6. Pass along? Nope. Not passing my iPad to the lady in the next beach chair. 7. Damn, I can read my email on this thing? I am on vacation. 8. My kids want to borrow the iPad to play Zombie Attack. 9. The lifeguard asked me to pull up the weather.com 10. Gin and Tonic. My magazines do not mind if I spill on them.
All in all, I like the iPad. Let us not forget that even with the iPad we still need great editorial, layout and advertisers. So, magazines are not dead. The way they get delivered will (has) changed. Digital delivery must be an important part of your business plan, but the iPad is only one in a mix of many platforms for the future. Digital assets allow us to take everything we love to the next level. Many topics like this covered at the Niche Digital Magazine Conference in Chicago in September. http://www.nichedigitalconference.com
Love the net, love my mags!
Cheers.
